Every Day in the Morning (slow) is a work that looks and reads like no other.

Sam, a composer, reflects on his floundering career, life with his lover and tensions with his father. Some thoughts, like facial hair and breakfast, are mundane; others, like love, money and war, are often overwhelming. At turns laughable and vain, at others, tender and considered, Sam's feelings and ideas turn continuously. The result is an oddly lyrical streamof– consciousness that's as conversational as its appearance is unconventional.

Few words and the generous white space on each page invite a distinct interaction with the text, one where every detail, every placement and every repetition influences meaning. The lack of punctuation allows the reader the freedom to internalize this exquisitely crafted work and understand the protagonist's state of mind.

The exceptional style of Every Day in the Morning (slow) amounts to a kind of thinging, somewhere between singing and thinking, thing and thought, utter brilliance and complete crap. A novella with long poem features, slow breaks the rules of both genres, while at the same time offering an addictive and compulsive flow that may make it the fastest book you will ever (want to) read.

On the last Tuesday of November, In Other Words takes to the phones for two fascinating interviews: one with Richard Greene in Cobourg, and another with Amanda Adams in San Francisco.

Governor-General's Award-winning poet Richard Greene reads excerpts from his long poem "Over the Border" and talks about the travels by Greyhound and Amtrak that inspired it. "Over the Border" is one of the poems in his latest collection, Boxing the Compass (Signal Editions, Véhicule Press). Since this interview was recorded earlier in November, Boxing the Compass has received the Governor General's Award for poetry.

Amanda Adams, author of Ladies of the Field: Early Women Archaeologists and Their Search for Adventure (Greystone Books, D&M Publishers Inc.), discusses female pioneers in archaeology. Ladies of the Field examines the lives and work of seven of the Victorian wanderers who opened this field to women -- one of whom was also a famous mystery novelist. Any guesses?

According to Adams, "The first women archaeologists were Victorian era adventurers who felt most at home when farthest from it."

Stephanie Dickison is a journalist, columnist, essayist and cultural critic who has published hundreds of articles, interviews, essays, columns, profiles, features and reviews. Her most recent book is The 30-Second Commute: A Non-Fiction Comedy About Writing & Working From Home.

Allyson Latta is an independent literary editor who teaches memoir writing through Days Road Writers' Workshops as well as libraries, writers’ organizations and literary festivals. She has edited nominees for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction, and winners of the Commonwealth Writers' Prize, the Giller Prize, the Governor General's Literary Award, and the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize. In spring 2004 Allyson developed and began teaching her first online course on memoir writing for Ryerson University. Today, through her workshops, she offers encouragement and guidance to memoirists of all ages.

Tune in Tuesday, October 20th, at 2:00 p.m. for an interview with Kate Marshall Flaherty about her latest collection of poetry, Where We Are Going.

This is Kate Marshall Flaherty's third poetry book; her first two are Tilted Equilibrium and String of Mysteries. She has also published a chapbook, Unfathom, for which she won the 2006 Shaunt Basmajian Award. In the same year she was shortlisted for both the Pablo Neruda Award for Poetry and the Descant Best Canadian Poem. She has just finished participating in this year's Random Acts of Poetry, in which she "poemed" people in hospitals, cafes, parks, yoga classes, ESL classes, and in Parks and Recreation vehicles.

There will be a bit of reading, a bit of talk, and an excerpt from her upcoming CD. Don't miss it!

Also, we’ll take a sneak peek at a soon-to-be-launched CD called Tree House with poems by Ronna Bloom and music by Peter Dick. It’s a really wonderful collaboration, and an example of the kind of creative sparks that can fly when two compatible artists start to riff on each other's work. According to Ronna Bloom:

I have been struck by how [Peter Dick] hears and translates the poetry, so that what is reflected musically attunes to the nonverbal core of the poem .... He took the poems through his own musical and felt landscape, one that resonated with mine and generated a "how did you hear that in there?" amazement .... I notice, too, that when I read poetry while he plays, I read differently. Slower. More deeply. I don't know why. Maybe it's trusting someone to carry this trembling thing with me, gently or raucously, into the air in this new form.

We Need a New Host

CKLN 88.1FM's In Other Words Seeks New Host/Programmer

CKLN's "In Other Words" is an established radio show that focuses on literature and spoken word – poetry, fiction, non fiction, small press, and anything in between. We are looking for a new programmer / host for one Tuesday of the month at 2pm.

If you’re interested, please let us know. Send a letter of intent, listing relevant experience (radio experience would be great but is by no means necessary), your areas of literary interest, and what you'd like to focus on in the show. The position would begin as soon as possible, and training would be provided. You would also be welcome to observe existing programmers and hosts in action.

As one of several hosts, you would be responsible for producing, organizing and delivering the content of your assigned Tuesday. Each host/programmer has their own style, which ensures variety and diversity week to week on In Other Words.

Please consider the following when applying: What kinds of writers or performers would you like to feature? Do you prefer interviews or recordings, or a combination of both? In addition to producing a monthly show, hosts must be able to commit to technical training, once-a-year fundraising, CKLN meetings and occasionally filling in for other hosts. They'll discuss her forthcoming debut novel Swim, Marianne will read excerpts, and they'll play some tunes.

Swim entwines the present with those past actions and consequences that have brought Kat to the Greek mountain village where her father was born. She swims laps while her fourteen-year-old daughter reclines on a chaise lounge, poolside, reading a book. Without ever leaving the pool we enter discrete scenes with Kat’s parents, daughter, husband and lover. On entering each point in this history, Kat reveals an undertow of sound, rhythm and words in their rippling meanings. Each new lap moves Kat closer to her impending decision: whether she will leave her husband. But the deeper tension within this innovative novel derives from the writing itself – its vital urgency that extends the possibilities of narrative beyond the fixed and into the fluid.

Marianne Apostolides is a writer and critic whose first book was published by W.W. Norton and translated into Spanish and Swedish. Her current writing explores the ‘contact zone’ between genres – poetry vs. prose, fiction vs. non-fiction, creative vs. critical; it has appeared in The Walrus, Room, and Bookninja.com Magazine among other publications. She lives in Toronto with her two children.

Rhea Tregebov won the Pat Lowther Award with her very first collection of poetry,
Remembering History ('82), and has since published four more collections of her poetry,
five children's picture books and is the editor of nine anthologies of essays, poetry, and
fiction. She is currently working as a Professor in the Creative Writing Program at the
University of British Columbia, specializing in poetry and translation.

Anne Michaels describes Rhea's poems as "deeply compassionate" and "the clarity of her voice deeply moving." Rhea is just in from UBC briefly, for her reading at The Art Bar Poetry Series. So this is a special treat. Please tune in!

Tony Burgess lives in Stayner Ontario, with his wife Rachel Jones and their son, Griffin. He is the author of The Hellmouths of Bewdley, Pontypool Changes Everything, and Caesarea. Pontypool has been optioned for a film by Bruce McDonald.

During the show, they will discuss the process of adapting a novel to film, play some tunes, Tony will read some of his work, and they'll talk about where the hell he gets his crazy notions.

About the writer:
Sally Cooper grew up in Inglewood, Ontario, population 400. She has an M.A. in English Literature from the University of Guelph, and has published widely in such places as Shift, Blood & Aphorisms, Carousel, The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and eye weekly. Her first novel, Love Object, came out in 2002 to critical acclaim. She wrote her second novel, Tell Everything, with the generous support of The Canada Council for the Arts and The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico. She lives and writes in Hamilton, Ontario.

About the novel:
It is the summer of 1985. Seventeen-year-old Pauline has just moved from northern Ontario to the Westwoods subdivision when she first meets Ramona, who looks like she just walked out of a ZZ Top video. Their friendship is intense and immediate, and they spend their time writing and acting out plays. To complicate matters, Pauline shares a murder fixation with Ramona’s fiancé, James, who likes to role-play serial killers. As plans for her wedding advance, Ramona insists on involving Pauline in her games with James. Before long, their activities reach a climax that severs Pauline and Ramona’s relationship.

A few years later, Ramona is accused of murdering her husband. Police find Pauline living in a stable, if bland, domesticity with intern Alex Shore. She gives them a statement and ends up testify for the Crown at Ramona Hawkes’ murder trial. As her story goes public, Pauline struggles to understand her feelings for Ramona and the extent to which she consented to their sexual activities.

Tell Everything is a complex, innovative novel about characters so deeply involved in their macabre fixations that they need to live them out. Trial transcripts, tabloid columns and other alternative perspectives balance and challenge Pauline’s growing sense that she is not a victim; that submission and individual power may be contained in the same act.
