Interview with Lorraine Johnson on August 31, 2010

“It seems to me that one of the most meaningful gifts we receive from the food we grow ourselves is the gift of story. What we consume with each bit are the narratives embedded in the fruits of our labor.”

Tune in to "In Other Words" on August 31st to hear local author and guerrilla gardener Lorraine Johnson talk about her latest book, City Farmer. It's a look at the creative ways people are taking back the soil in urban spaces -- and how you can, too.

She sees gardening as "a strenuous conversation with the planet -- indeed, as one of the most transformative ways to find our place in the world and what we want that world to be."

Lorraine Johnson has published more than 10 books on a wide range of topics from composting and native plant gardening to censorship and travel. She lives in Toronto in a barn-shaped house with three chickens and two cats.

All-Music Edition of In Other Words

Do you write while listening to music? Is there a particular song that is mentioned in your last book? A favourite tune to "get you in the mood" to work on that manuscript you can't quite finish?

Tune in for my first show devoted purely to music! It'll be a full hour of music chosen by writers - you'll hear the songs they chose and why they chose them. From Johnny Cash to Joy Division, rap to rhapsody... as diverse as the authors polled.

Don't miss this summer music special edition.

Of course, I'll be kicking the show off with a pick or two of my own... tough to choose! Bonnie Prince Billy is leading my shortlist, but I may change my mind by Tuesday...
