The times they are a-changin' ... for writers and bookstores

Tune in at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30th when “In Other Words” explores the effects of a changing marketplace on writers and bookstores.

The Toronto Women’s Book Store has been serving the community for more than 35 years and is one of Toronto's longest-lived independent bookstores. Devoted to nurturing diverse communities, it has prevailed through economic hardship and even fire but now finds itself struggling to continue. Diana Kiesners interviews Alex MacFadyen, co-manager of the Toronto Women’s Book Store, about the storied past of a Toronto institution, and the challenges facing independent bookstores in the current economic climate.

Freelance writers too are caught in a perfect storm of Internet publishing, decreased revenues for periodicals, and less rewarding contracts. In our second interview, writer, poet and editor Diane Elizabeth Hill talks about current issues in the world of freelance writing and the impact these can have on a writer's work and livelihood.

Interview with Fern Lindzon

Hopefully I'll be able to get a selection of the interview up on the blog, since it was extremely well received. I also want to give people the opportunity of thinking of new kinds of writing: and a discussion of lyric writing was something that appealed to both literary writers and musicians, providing a crossover of artists. Check Fern's music/lyrics out at http://www.myspace.com/fernlindzon

See you again next month (the second week, when my guest will be Vancouver novelist, Dennis Bolen, author of Kaspoit! (Anvil Press, 2009).
