Tune in December 21 for Interview with Author Alexandra Leggat

Alexandra Leggat is one of those writers that grasp you from the get go. You can't put her books down, you can't shake her mesmerizing stories for weeks. She is a force to be reckoned with.

I think her work is hugely underrated and under appreciated. Which is why I am thrilled she's gracing the mic for my last show of the year. We'll be discussing her latest book, Animal, which was a Finalist for the Trillium Book Award, and also happens to be her most personal book to date.

You don't want to miss it.

Tune in Tuesday, December 21 at 2 pm.

November 30th: Interviews with Amanda Adams and Richard Greene

On the last Tuesday of November, In Other Words takes to the phones for two fascinating interviews: one with Richard Greene in Cobourg, and another with Amanda Adams in San Francisco.

Governor-General's Award-winning poet Richard Greene reads excerpts from his long poem "Over the Border" and talks about the travels by Greyhound and Amtrak that inspired it. "Over the Border" is one of the poems in his latest collection, Boxing the Compass (Signal Editions, VĂ©hicule Press). Since this interview was recorded earlier in November, Boxing the Compass has received the Governor General's Award for poetry.

Amanda Adams, author of
Ladies of the Field: Early Women Archaeologists and Their Search for Adventure (Greystone Books, D&M Publishers Inc.), discusses female pioneers in archaeology. Ladies of the Field examines the lives and work of seven of the Victorian wanderers who opened this field to women -- one of whom was also a famous mystery novelist. Any guesses?

According to Adams, "The first women archaeologists were Victorian era adventurers who felt most at home when farthest from it."

Don't miss hearing these two engrossing writers talk about their work.

Tune in November 16 at 2 pm for Charles Foran Interview

Mordecai – unauthorized, of course – is the first biography of Richler to be written with full, exclusive access to family letters and the private archives. It is a sweeping account of his life – from Montreal, Paris, Ibiza, the South of France, London, and back to Montreal. It is also an extraordinary love story: his devotion to the beautiful Florence Mann, whom he met on the eve of his wedding to another, lasted more than forty years.

Tune in on Tuesday, November 16 at 2 pm to listen to my interview with acclaimed novelist and journalist Charles Foran and find out what it was like to chronicle the life and times of such an iconic figure!

Ooh, it's going to be good.

Evie Christie and The Bourgeois Empire - Tomorrow!

Tune in as In Other Words host & programmer Jennifer
LoveGrove
spends an hour on air with Evie Christie, discussing her new book The Bourgeois Empire.

Evie will read from the novel, Jennifer will ask questions, and they'll play some tunes.

The Bourgeois Empire features paranoia, pills, and torrent after torrent of glorious porn. A marriage devoid of both sex and emotion. A broken hand, a perpetually surreal home reno, a dying dog.

Evie Christie's first novel is a Nabokovian fever dream, an encyclopedic guide to mortal sin, and a thoroughly contemporary reimagining of Billy Wilder’s classic film The Lost Weekend. And yes, of course, it’s a love story too.

Tomorrow at 2pm on your FM radio, or online.

Interview with Lorraine Johnson on August 31, 2010

“It seems to me that one of the most meaningful gifts we receive from the food we grow ourselves is the gift of story. What we consume with each bit are the narratives embedded in the fruits of our labor.”

Tune in to "In Other Words" on August 31st to hear local author and guerrilla gardener Lorraine Johnson talk about her latest book, City Farmer. It's a look at the creative ways people are taking back the soil in urban spaces -- and how you can, too.

She sees gardening as "a strenuous conversation with the planet -- indeed, as one of the most transformative ways to find our place in the world and what we want that world to be."

Lorraine Johnson has published more than 10 books on a wide range of topics from composting and native plant gardening to censorship and travel. She lives in Toronto in a barn-shaped house with three chickens and two cats.

The times they are a-changin' ... for writers and bookstores

Tune in at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30th when “In Other Words” explores the effects of a changing marketplace on writers and bookstores.

Devoted to nurturing diverse communities, it has prevailed through economic hardship and even fire but now finds itself struggling to continue. Diana Kiesners interviews Alex MacFadyen, co-manager of the Toronto Women’s Book Store, about the storied past of a Toronto institution, and the challenges facing independent bookstores in the current economic climate.

Freelance writers too are caught in a perfect storm of Internet publishing, decreased revenues for periodicals, and less rewarding contracts. In our second interview, writer, poet and editor Diane Elizabeth Hill talks about current issues in the world of freelance writing and the impact these can have on a writer's work and livelihood.

Damian Rogers - Tuesday, January 26, 2pm

Tune in to "In Other Words" this Tuesday, January 26 from 2-3pm as host Jennifer LoveGrove interviews Damian Rogers about her book Paper Radio. They'll read poems, discuss writing, play tunes, and charm the pants off you.

About the book: Damian Rogers tracks the transformative moment, where emotion and deep memory seek form through sound and image. Her poems tune into a stream of cosmic chatter, channeling voices that tell their stories slant, from a chaste nineteenth century utopian mystic to a chorus of crones to the radical characters of Detroit’s sixties-era radical underground. Examining the equally futile and seductive impulses to chase both chaos and perfection, Rogers taps into history and mythology as each transmission mines material that is at once personal and public.

About the author: Damian Rogers was born and raised in suburban Detroit. She holds a bachelor’ s degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and a graduate degree from the Bennington Writing Seminars in Bennington, Vermont. Her poems have been published in Brick Magazine, The Walrus, Salt Hill, MoonLit, and This Magazine. She lives in Toronto.

About the host: Jennifer LoveGrove has been a host and programmer at "In Other Words" since June 2007. She has published two books of poetry, is completing a novel, and was recently nominated for a K.M. Hunter Artist Award for literature.
