The times they are a-changin' ... for writers and bookstores

Tune in at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30^th when “In Other Words” explores the effects of a changing marketplace on writers and bookstores.

The Toronto Women’s Book Store has been serving the community for more than 35 years and is one of Toronto's longest-lived independent bookstores. Devoted to nurturing diverse communities, it has prevailed through economic hardship and even fire but now finds itself struggling to continue. Diana Kiesners interviews Alex MacFadyen, co-manager of the Toronto Women’s Book Store, about the storied past of a Toronto institution, and the challenges facing independent bookstores in the current economic climate.

Freelance writers too are caught in a perfect storm of Internet publishing, decreased revenues for periodicals, and less rewarding contracts. In our second interview, writer, poet and editor Diane Elizabeth Hill talks about current issues in the world of freelance writing and the impact these can have on a writer's work and livelihood.

Interview with Author Mary K. Armstrong on Tuesday, April 20

I am thrilled to announce that my next guest will by author Mary K. Armstrong. Mary, a trauma therapist, reveals her own story of childhood sexual abuse.

Bio:

Fern Lindzon’s debut jazz recording, Moments Like These; duets with Don Thompson, George Koller & Reg Schwager, reveals her skill as a pianist, vocalist, composer, lyricist and arranger. The CD garnered excellent reviews in Whole Note, Montreal Mirror, Coda, Now Magazine, LA Jazz Scene, Vancouver Sun, a feature article in The Globe and Mail, numerous endorsements on radio by JAZZ FM, CBC, campus radio, and online sites including jazzreview.com.

Fern’s current quartet includes multiple Juno Award winning Mike Murley on saxophones, George Koller on bass and Nick Fraser on drums. It was recorded by the CBC radio’s Canada Live for broadcast in May 2009. This quartet will be recording Fern’s second jazz CD in April 2010.

Myna Wallin is an author whose next book, Confessions of a Reluctant Cougar, comes out spirng 2010, with Tightrope Books. She recently received an Honourary Mention in the 2010 Winston Collins/ Descant Prize for Best Canadian Poem.

About the book: Damian Rogers tracks the transformative moment, where emotion and deep memory seek form through sound and image. Her poems tune into a stream of cosmic chatter, channeling voices that tell their stories slant, from a chaste nineteenth century utopian mystic to a chorus of crones to the radical characters of Detroit’s sixties-era radical underground. Examining the equally futile and seductive impulses to chase both chaos and perfection, Rogers taps into history and mythology as each transmission mines material that is at once personal and public.

About the author: Damian Rogers was born and raised in suburban Detroit. She holds a bachelor’ s degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and a graduate degree from the Bennington Writing Seminars in Bennington, Vermont. Her poems have been published in Brick Magazine, The Walrus, Salt Hill, MoonLit, and This Magazine. She lives in Toronto.
